Amtrak tickets can be changed or cancelled and your change fee is determined by the type of ticket you’ve purchased. If you cancel an Amtrak ticket you will either get a refund to your original form of payment or a voucher that can be applied to your next trip. What you get back is determined by the type of fare you booked, which is one of Saver, Value, Flexible, Business, Acela First Class or Sleeper Accommodations.
Amtrak has stopped charging change fees for tickets bought by September 6th, 2021. Reservations made with points are included in this policy.
If the cancellation is less than 24 hours from purchase you’ll get a full refund on the original form of payment regardless of your fare type. After the 24 hour period your options are as follows:

Saver Fares
When canceling or changing saver fares on Amtrak you’ll get a voucher worth 75% of the original ticket. We have gotten these many times and they are stored right in your account so when you book your next trip online you can have it automatically applied.
The change fee is 25% of the ticket.
Value Fares
When canceling an Amtrak Value Fare you’ll get a full refund to the original form of payment if it is 15 days or more from departure. Inside of 15 days and you’ll be charged a 25% change or cancellation fee.
Flexible Fares
When canceling or changing an Amtrak Flexible Fare there is no fee if done before departure. Refunds will be made to the original form of payment.
Business Fares
When canceling or changing an Amtrak Business Fare there is no fee if done before departure. Refunds will be made to the original form of payment.
Acela First Class
When canceling or changing an Amtrak Acela First Class Fare there is no fee if done before departure. Refunds will be made to the original form of payment.
Sleeper Accommodations
When canceling an Amtrak Sleeper Accommodation you’ll get a full refund to the original form of payment if it is more than 120 days until departure. A 25 % fee is charged between 120 and 15 days. 14 days or less before departure you’ll still have a 25% fee but you’ll also only get a voucher.
There are no fees to change your reservation.
